Tips For Growing An Indoor Herb Garden

The weather may not be brilliant at the moment and the cold conditions may be keeping us all inside instead of out and about tending our gardens, but that doesn’t mean we can’t exercise our green thumbs from time to time.

Any good cook will always need a plentiful supply of herbs so what better time to start your own little herb garden indoors than right now? In order to get off on the right foot, pick a spot where your herbs can enjoy as much natural light as possible. They should be getting at least four hours of sun each day.

You also need to make sure that your herb pots have good drainage and the easiest way to go about this is to put your pots on a saucer (metal, rubber or plastic). Don’t put the pots directly on your windowsill as you’ll probably end up ruining it!

Temperature is also important to consider but the good news is that herbs flourish well in the same kind of temperatures that keep us comfortable so you don’t need to worry too much. You can still keep your herbs near the window at night but try not to let the leaves touch the glass. If you’re trying to grow basil, don’t leave it on the windowsill at night as the leaves will fade in cool air.

As for watering, allow the pots to dry out a bit in between and test the soil with your finger. If it’s dry two inches from the top then you need to give your herbs a drink.
